Reflexology is a simple, non invasive pressure technique used to encourage the body's own natural energy flow and self healing capacity. By applying pressure and massage to certain points on the feet it can have an analgesic and rebalancing effect on a corresponding area elsewhere on the body.
Can be effective in the treatment of many conditions such as IBS, anxiety, sinus problems, headaches and migraines, muscular aches and sciatica (amongst others). Reflexology can be as effective for promoting good health and preventing illness it is for relieving symptoms of stress, injury or illness.

REFLEXOLOGY COULD BE THE ANSWER...
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is an ancient healing therapy, based on the principle that every organ, gland and part of your body is represented in specific areas in your hands and feet. By applying a firm but relaxing pressure to these areas with the hands, a qualified reflexologist is able to stimulate the whole body and promote healing and balance.
Who can benefit from reflexology?
Reflexology is suitable for all ages and may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. Reflexology also benefits healthy people and acts as a good prevention against illness. Reflexology can ease tension, stimulate the release of toxins as well as boosting your energy levels and helping your body to find its natural state of equilibrium. After having completed a course of reflexology treatments for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain health and well-being.
While many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress, at the same time many doctors, consultants and other health care professionals recognise reflexology as a well established, respected and effective therapy.
Reflexology as a complementary therapy has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of many conditions including :-
Treatment Information
What happens at an appointment?
On the first visit there will be a preliminary talk to determine your present and past health and lifestyle. Then you will be asked to remove your shoes and socks and whilst sitting in a comfortable position your feet will be massaged. There is no need to worry about ticklish feet, as the experience is much deeper than this. The reflexologist will access the different points on the feet and some of these may feel a little sensitive. Any discomfort is fleeting and an indication of congestion or imbalance in a corresponding part of the body. It is generally a pleasant and soothing experience. The whole process as well a being healing is also very relaxing and people often doze off.
Number of treatments?
The number of treatments needed usually depends on how long your body has been out of balance, however, some people simply require a periodic treatment.
How will I feel after a treatment?
Following a treatment you should feel thoroughly cleansed and invigorated. A feeling of calm and well being is experienced as stress and tension are relieved and blood circulation is improved, leaving all systems of your body functioning fully and within their natural equilibrium. It is possible that you may experience feeling mildly lethargic, nauseous, or tearful, but this is transitory and is a part of the healing process.

Reflexology is a popular and relaxing holistic therapy based on the principle that reflex points on the soles, tops and sides of the feet are connected to corresponding areas throughout the body. In this way, the feet can be seen as a "map" of the body so the reflexologist can use massage techniques to help correct imbalances throughout the body and help release blocked energy.
The Chinese are said to have used an early form of reflexology more than 5000 years ago in their use of pressure therapies. Egyptian tomb artwork dating from around 2000BC shows foot massage too, an indication that the benefits of working on the feet to encourage general good health have been acknowledged for some time.

These ancient forms of foot massage were based on the principle that energy zones run throughout the body. The principle which was called zone therapy was further developed in the early 19th century witht he discovery that applying pressure in various places along 10 vertical zones the length of the body could ease underlying problems. These ideas were further expanded when practitioners found that working with the feet was most effective, as they were the most sensitive areas due to the high concentration of nerve endings.
Reflexology was introduced to Britain in the early 1960's and its popularity continues to grow.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can everyone enjoy reflexology?
Reflexology is suitable for most adults but there are certain conditions where you should avoid treatment. To ensure the continued well-being of clients, all treatments begin with a consultation, which enables your therapist to make sure that reflexology is right for you. In some instances your doctor's permission may be required before treatments can commence, for example, if you have diabetes. An individual confidential record will be kept with any relevant notes for future treatments.
What happens during a reflexology treatment?
A reflexology treatment usually lasts for approximately 45 mintues - 1 hour. As its just the feet that are being worked on, you remain fully clothed simply removing your shoes and socks. You'll be invited to relax on a treatment couch and then your feet will be cleansed prior to treament commencing. A variety of reflexology techniques may be employed to suit your individual needs.
Should I do anything special after a reflexology session?
To gain maximum benefit from your treatment, try to rest afterwards - this helps your body's natural healing process. Caffeine can have a stimulating effect, so tea, coffee and cola should be avoided if possible to help you remain relaxed. Drink plenty of water or herbal tea over the next few days - this will help to flush away toxins. Try to avoid alcohol and tobacco for at least 24 hours. If you have any queries, please don't hesitate to ask either before booking an appointment or during the appointment itself.
What benefits can I expect from reflexology?
Potential benefits of reflexology include; reduced stress, feelings of deep relaxation, increased energy levels, improved circulation, more efficient removal of impurities and toxins, stimulation and improvement of circulatory and lymphatic systems, a stronger immune system and the release of endorphins (the body's own pain relieving and 'feel good' hormones).
